Hello all,

We made it. The end of the year. Whew! Given the context of being at the end, I thought I’d close the year with divergent topics: first this newsletter on getting things done (a final push!) and the next on slowing down and pausing.

The concept of attention has been showing up for me during the last month with the U.S. election and the tone of the media. And being in conversation with others on this topic, it made me think, “What is worthy of our attention?” There is a lot that pulls us these days, especially social media and the news. But as you think about a final push for the year and the environment you want to create for yourself, what do you let in? What do you let take up your time and mental energy?

So for that final “push” of the year before we pause, I think it’s helpful to ask, where do you want to put and apply your valuable attention right now as you close out 2020?

With that in mind, I offer:

  • First here an article, “Get Done What You Want to Get Done”

  • Some round-up articles on making progress, along with a few other tidbits

  • A Tool: How to Clarify Your Priorities

  • A Practice: What do you put on the calendar first?

I hope you’re able to put your attention towards things that energize you and will fill you up for the month ahead.

Be well, all!
Kathy

We’d love to hear what would be helpful to you on your Sustainable Ambition journey.

The Round-Up

Right Success: In this article, I share the idea of knowing your Why, What, and How Far. If you don’t have a passion, this is a framework that can help you further define where to focus and find more work fulfillment.

Right Aspiration: I love this creative approach towards prioritizing one's projects in the moment anchored around one’s values, developed by a game designer. See if his approach might work for you.

Right Effort: Want to make progress on your big goals, but get overwhelmed? Chunk them into smaller pieces to pace them out and make more progress. Read more about how to do it and why it works.

Reading: As much of the country is being asked to cocoon again (a more positive spin on isolating), get inspired to embrace a positive winter mindset for enhanced feelings of well-being.

Listening: Hear tips from Charlie Gilkey, author of “Start Finishing: How to Go from Idea to Done,” on how to start finishing projects that matter.

Smiling: I first came across Nandi Bushell randomly on Instagram. ICYMI, check out this video of Nandi doing a drum battle with Foo Fighters drummer, Dave Grohl. So fun! And damn, she’s impressive!

Featuring: How can you help others prevent burnout? Be an empathetic leader.

How to Clarify Your Priorities

Managing one’s time and effort to achieve Sustainable Ambition can be the biggest challenge and often needs to become an ongoing practice. And, determining one’s priorities is critical to this task and to focusing your attention.

But, how does one even determine a true, essential priority?
We offer a place to start.

A Practice: What do you put on your calendar first?

Michelle Obama in her podcast interview with Valerie Jarret talked about putting herself on her calendar first. Barbara Corcoran on Rebecca Minkoff's Super Women podcast talked about putting fun on the calendar first. What do you want to put on the calendar first to prioritize what is important to you that feeds you outside of your work? Is it time with your children, your partner, a friend? Is it time to exercise? Is it time to be in nature each day? Is it a 30-minute meditation? What will you put on your calendar first?
