Sustainable Ambition Forum - 12.13.22
Have I mentioned I’m a huge West Wing fan? Can’t get enough of the show.
There’s an episode called “Gone Quiet” where a submarine doesn’t contact the powers at be as planned, and the President must decide if something has happened or wait to see if the submarine has just “gone quiet” because they were caught in enemy territory.
I think while the topic is a bit dark it’s a brilliant metaphor for what the end of year can feel like. There’s this demanding world out there—what if I were to choose to go quiet for a bit? What if we were to trust our instincts that we know what we need right now and that we’ll re-emerge when we’re ready?
It’s like hibernation—get cozy at home, slow down, and conserve energy.
And it’s also about quieting the noise around us and getting quiet so we can hear ourselves.
It’s a perfect time to use that quiet—the space and the ability to listen inward—to reflect on this year and what you’re hoping for in the year to come. For that purpose, I offer below 11 Questions to Close Out the Year & Welcome 2023.
Happy holidays! Wishing you a 2023 filled with hope, opportunity, and Sustainable Ambition.

A Practice: 11 Questions to Close Out the Year & Welcome 2023
What has 2022 brought for you? The end of year and start of the new year creates a perfect moment to pause for reflection.
Give yourself permission and make time to look back at your year and look forward to the one ahead. I offer these 11 Questions or ways to inquire about what’s present for you as you close the year and start 2023.
This year’s inquiries are rooted in the idea of what’s called Polarity Management, which suggests that answers are rarely either/or and rather are more often an integrated mix of the good of opposite poles.
It asks us to challenge how we often think—that life is either this OR that. Yet, life is often more about the AND. What if the answer lies in this AND that?
Both are possible. Explore this AND that for yourself as you close 2022 and start 2023.
Here’s to creating space for whatever is needed in the moment and all the possibility that’s calling to you for the new year!

At the beginning of each year, we share our Monthly Progress Practice. Progress is made through small, consistent action. Practice makes progress. We offer a monthly guidance on small actions or inquiries to inspire positive change this year.
Our guidance for December: Celebrate! Pause to acknowledge and honor the year. What’s worthy of celebration?
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and freedom.”
