Be your wholehearted self & find the place that values YOU
One of the ways you can find your own success is to be your wholehearted self.
I loved this story that my good friend, Philip VanDusen, forwarded on LinkedIn about a young woman who is given a used car by her father. In progression, he tells her to take the car to different locations to see how much people will pay for it. She first goes to a used car lot - $1,000. She then goes to a pawn shop - $100. She then goes to a car enthusiast show - $100,000. It seems the car is a classic that is in hot demand.
I’ve had the experience in recent years where I was trying to push myself into the “should.” I should work in technology because I'm in the Bay Area. I should work at a hot branding agency, because that is what’s respected. Yet, I wasn’t showing up as myself, for one, and, not surprisingly, I was hitting a wall. Because I wasn't presenting my true self and trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, I wasn’t being valued for who I am.
I then started to show up as my true self and going after opportunities that aligned better to both who I am and what I truly wanted. Guess what? It all started to click. Opportunities showed up unexpectedly. I was receiving positive feedback. And momentum started to build again.
The Insight: If you’re looking for your next thing, first be your wholehearted self. Next, be clear about what you want and what is going to be a good fit for you as your best self. Then, keep searching for the place that values who you are, what you can contribute, and knows what you are worth.
