What do you love doing?

I don’t think “passion” is the word to be using to identify your vocation. It sets too high a bar, is singular in nature when we are more than one note, and is difficult to identify. “Do what you love” can also be problematic. That phrasing again points towards an unattainable goal that is people find hard determine.

Shifting to “What do you love doing?” changes the focus to the types of motivations that are more in line with finding happy work. What you “love doing” can be the type of work activities that will be enjoyable and engage you and ones where you will be eager to put in the effort to master them. Such a focus can allow there to be multi-dimensionality. It’s easier to get clarity around at least one thing you love doing that can offer signals to where you should be looking more deeply. Do you love thinking and writing, crafting stories, ideating, working with people, being in conversation, solving puzzles, working on computers, and the list can go on.

The Insight: Release yourself from the painstaking search to identify your passion. Instead consider the activities you love to do. These might change over time, but pause to pay attention to The What that draws you in and when you lose yourself in activities.
